WHAT STORIES ARE YOU LOOKING TO TELL THIS YEAR?
MARK CLENNON
My goal for the stories I’m looking to tell hasn’t changed but I am looking to tell more longterm stories moving forward. My mission is always working towards telling the totality of black life— the joy pain and triumph of it all.
TOBi
You took some of my favourite photos of last year, before you were even apart of this project. The shot of the protest outside the trump tower shook me immediately. Did you feel that image would turn out as powerfully as it did?
MARK CLENNON
It was a powerful moment really. I’ve covered and attended many protests in the city in the past but there was a palpable difference in the energy that day. We were fed up and tired of these circumstances. Every day I try to capture that feeling. It was a powerful moment, I’m happy I was able to tell the story of that specific moment.

When I was reviewing the image, I knew it was a good one and that it would resonate with a lot of people, but I had no idea it would resonate as strongly as it did on a global scale. It was humbling to see my work in that way.

How have you navigated this pandemic and how has it affected your work?
MARK CLENNON
It’s been tough navigating the pandemic because nobody has done this before. There’s not tutorial we can watch to give us the answers. Creatively I’ve been up and down and I’ve accepted that, and I’m just focusing my energy on being ready when my work process and inspiration converge. My work now is more intentional towards expressing my feelings, especially since I see my friends a lot less now.
