I feel like I’m in a serene, dream state when i look at your work. Do you set any intentions before you shoot? Is there a story you are choosing to tell?
MAKEDA SANDFORD
Thanks so much. As I was building my personal style I noticed my affinity for dreams, and dream-like images. It’s just something I gravitate toward and enjoy building on in my work. I mostly want to tell the story of multilayered individuals, since I’m often feeling as though we are asked to be simplified, easy to understand always. I like making portraits that show layers of someone’s identity.

My rhyme book is my confidant. It knows my deepest secrets and biggest desires. What’s your relationship with your camera like?
MAKEDA SANDFORD
My camera is my good, reliable friend that doubles as a very technical tool in creating. I love learning more about mechanics of photography to grow in image making, so my camera is most important to me.
TOBi
What are some things you envision in an ideal future? How do you think art can help shape that reality?
MAKEDA SANDFORD
I envision a world where humans are more emotionally vulnerable, and feel they can be. I think art can soothe, connect, and show us that we are not ever alone. Like James Baldwin said: you think your pain and your hear tbreak are unprecedented, but then you read.
